The Series

little nights was founded in 2019 as an expansion of Club Motte, a public storytelling night that centers unprepared, spontaneous stories told by members of the audience. As part of the expansion, we experimented with different ways of recreating that sort of vulnerable, unpredictable community space across disciplines—writing, drawing, dance, etc.

When the pandemic stopped us from meeting in person, we used the early months of quarantine to develop smaller, more intimate games to practice new ways of making and staying open.

In October 2022 we returned to in-person activities, and have since hosted events at different venues around New York City, including Center for Fiction, Museum of the City of New York, ICP, Book Club Bar, ArtShack Cafe, and WORD Bookstores.

In October 2023 we hosted our first Little Nights Big Weekend, a multi-day retreat that takes the generative, exploratory space of our one-night events and expands it across 2-3 days. Learn more and apply for our next one!
